Paris - French wearers of traditional Muslim clothing that covers the face will face a stark choice starting Monday. They can do without their burqas or niqab, or face a fine for wearing the garments in public. When the French law goes into effect, it will make France the first Western country to institute such a ban. Practically, it will mean that women are barred from appearing in public in such garments, whether they do so willingly or under pressure from relatives. The rule applies to all walks of life, even those going to the cinema or grocery shopping. Those forced to choose between the law and their culture have expressed rage and frustration. 'This is an attack on freedoms,' said one woman, who said that Muslim women will now be forced into social isolation. One woman, who identified herself as Soraya in a broadcast interview said many Muslim women freely opt for the burqa, which is a full-body covering, often leaving only an opening around the eyes, or the niqab, a veil covering the face. Opponents say that many women are forced into wearing the garments by male relatives. 'I feel naked without my veil,' said Soraya. 'It's my choice. My husband has nothing to do with it.'
