Even Canadian accents, which are, theoretically, easier to understand than a British, Australian or Irish accent. Television executives have a great fear that the Midwest - and this is a TV truism, not just another chance to pick up on what Hollywood often calls "the flyover states" - will not put up with "funny" sounding accents. So anyone hoping to import a series from Scotland, completely untouched, will have to put those dreams on hold.
And yet, the savvy viewer will tell you that sometimes a series done in England, for example, is better than whatever American writers and actors can do in the reincarnation of it, "The Office" being one of the rarest examples of brilliance on both sides of the pond. (HBO's "Extras" was also superb, but HBO helped fund the Ricky Gervais series rather than just buying it off the shelf.)

All of this leads up to "Secret Diary of a Call Girl," a new series that Showtime plucked fully formed from England and will begin airing tonight after "Weeds" for eight weeks (as Season 1), then another eight next year. It's an intriguing and eminently watchable half hour that has a lot going for it, but one comparison needs to be shunted aside immediately. No doubt someone somewhere will compare the humor - and "Secret Diary of a Call Girl" is a comedy, though it has its dramatic moments and inner reflections - to that of "Sex and the City" (the series and the movie). But outside of a love of place, the two series couldn't be more different.
In "Secret Diary of a Call Girl," London is as much a character as New York was in "Sex and the City." The creators of these series knew that to avoid such spectacular cities would not merely be an oversight, but an act of stupidity.

London is a beautiful mess in "Secret Diary of a Call Girl," alternating between throbs of excitement and drab and dreariness. There are gratuitous exterior shots in this Brit import and that's a good deal of the fun. The series feels like a small movie - precisely the feeling "Sex and the City" perfectly invoked until the actual movie came along.

But that's where comparisons end. "Sex and the City" was about four women in their 30s making a strong (some might say obsessive) play for love. Sure, Samantha was a sex machine who attempted to play the no-strings-attached card most of the time, but it was strictly for laughs. Whenever Samantha contemplated the emptiness of noncommitment, it barely made a dent in her psyche.

That's not always true, thankfully, in "Secret Diary of a Call Girl." The series stars Billie Piper ("Dr. Who") as Belle De Jour, a high-priced call girl in London who makes it clear in the first episode that she likes sex, money and independence, and is neither an addict, deprived of self-esteem or suffering from childhood abuse.

All of her friends think Hannah - her real name - is a legal secretary. She keeps her two identities separate with an obsessive quality that's admirable. In fact, Hannah/Belle has, for the most part, got her head wrapped around the complexities of a double life fairly well. It leaves her with a certain confidence and an unwillingness to seek either the viewer's approval or sympathy.
The series is based on the blog and book, "The Intimate Adventures of a London Call Girl," by the real Belle De Jour, who helped consult on the series - though all involved say her experiences were just a jumping off point for the television series, which is fiction. (All the writers on the series are female and they imbue Belle/Hannah with a clear sense of self while handling the ever-so-small creeping doubts and insecurities with a nuanced touch.)
The series works well on a number of levels. Piper will no doubt be the new nerd queen for sci-fi fans in this revealing portrait (though, truth be told, the nudity is limited, though present). She's excellent as Belle because she has a dry wit about her. The conceit viewers will have to adapt to is that she talks directly to the camera instead of a traditional voice-over (which is a dicey enough creative decision, choosing to break down the wall between the audience and action). And yet, Piper manages to be sexy, funny, droll, informative (this was, after all, taken from diaries) and slightly aloof. It's this last quality that gives the series a little something extra.

To the great credit of "Secret Diary of a Call Girl," Hannah/Belle is not portrayed as a woman who, given the right boyfriend, would change her lifestyle. Viewers learn from the get-go about Hannah's decision to become Belle. The sex, the money, the independence - and there's a suggestion that later in life she'll move on. But right now, it beats waitressing. By not rushing to the notion that Belle must be hiding something, a deep depression or emptiness, the writers are able to establish her strengths first. And then, with small hints - sometimes in scenes with her best (but taken) friend Ben (Iddo Goldberg), sometimes in unspoken visual scenes - the show is able to convey that Hannah/Belle does have doubts, does have moments of weakness for an ordinary life and may be rationalizing her existence.
The balance is near perfect.
Ultimately, however, this is a comedy about a woman in a certain situation that lends itself to humor. And like "Sex and the City" - oh, no, not that comparison - the half hour flies by and you realize that the human relationships depicted here are interesting and worth mining and Belle's life choices are entertaining.
If there are more series like this (which haven't been snapped up yet by BBC America), then by all means import them. Forget about remaking them - just air them.
